Novena to St Joseph

Prayed from March 10 to March 18, ending the day before its feast (Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, March 19).

Day 1

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.

Matthew 1:18–19 · BSB

Matthew introduces Joseph with one word: righteous. Then he shows what that meant. Finding that Mary was with child, Joseph did not want to expose her to public shame, so he planned to end the betrothal quietly. His goodness was not harsh; even before he understood, he chose mercy. The Gospels record not a single word spoken by Joseph, but they show us his choices. For nine days we will walk beside this quiet man, and ask him to teach us his kind of justice.

Saint Joseph, righteous and merciful, you protected Mary's dignity before you understood God's plan. Pray for me, that my sense of right may always be joined to kindness, and that I may act with quiet integrity when no one is watching. Amen.

Intention: For those who must make hard decisions about people they love.

Day 2

But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:20–21 · BSB

Just as Joseph had settled on his plan, an angel spoke to him in a dream: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid. The first thing heaven says to him is his name and his family line, a reminder of who he is and of the promise he belongs to. Then: do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. God did not take the responsibility away from Joseph; he took away the fear. God often meets us just when we have quietly decided to step back. What fear is God asking you to set down today?

Saint Joseph, you heard God tell you not to be afraid, and you trusted. Pray for me when fear makes me want to step back from what God asks. Help me remember who I am, and whose promise I belong to. Amen.

Intention: For engaged couples and newlyweds, and for all who fear commitment.

Day 3

When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his wife.

Matthew 1:24 · BSB

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took Mary as his wife. There is no recorded hesitation, no request for more proof. He simply got up and did it. Obedience in the Gospels is rarely dramatic; it often looks like a man getting out of bed and doing the next right thing. Think of the one thing you already know God is asking of you. Today could be the morning you get up and do it.

Saint Joseph, when God spoke, you rose and obeyed without delay. Pray for me, that I may stop putting off what I know is right. Give me your readiness, and the peace that comes from saying yes to God. Amen.

Intention: For married couples, that they may welcome each other faithfully every day.

Day 4

So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, since he was from the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to him in marriage and was expecting a child.

Luke 2:4–5 · BSB

A government decree sent Joseph on a journey of several days with Mary, who was close to giving birth. He did not choose the timing or the road. Luke tells us he went because he belonged to the house of David, and in that inconvenient census God was keeping a promise centuries old: the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. Joseph could not see that. He simply took care of Mary on the way. Pray today for anyone whose life has been upended by forces they cannot control.

Saint Joseph, you set out on a hard road and cared for Mary every step of the way. Pray for all whose plans are overturned by events they cannot control. Help us trust that God is still keeping his promises, even on roads we did not choose. Amen.

Intention: For those whose lives have been upended by events beyond their control.

Day 5

And when the time of purification according to the Law of Moses was complete, His parents brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer the sacrifice specified in the Law of the Lord: “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Luke 2:22–24 · BSB

Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the Temple as the Law required, and offered a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. The Law of Moses allowed that offering for families who could not afford a lamb. The Holy Family was poor, and Joseph provided for them with what he had. There is no shame in a modest offering made with a whole heart. Pray today for parents who work hard and still struggle to provide, and for every family quietly making do.

Saint Joseph, you presented Jesus to God with the offering of the poor. Pray for families who struggle to make ends meet. Help them find work, fair pay and generous neighbours, and teach me to share what I have. Amen.

Intention: For families who struggle to make ends meet.

Day 6

When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.” So he got up, took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,

Matthew 2:13–14 · BSB

Again an angel came in a dream, this time with urgent news: Herod was searching for the child to destroy him. Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and left for Egypt. The Holy Family became refugees in a foreign land. Joseph's courage was not loud; it was a departure in the dark, a long road, the work of starting over somewhere new. Pray today for migrants and refugees, and for the families who protect their children at great cost.

Saint Joseph, you fled by night to keep Jesus safe. Watch over every family forced to leave home. Pray that they find welcome, work and safety, and give me a heart that sees Christ in the stranger at my door. Amen.

Intention: For migrants and refugees, and for the communities that welcome them.

Day 7

“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s name Mary, and aren’t His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?

Matthew 13:55 · BSB

When Jesus taught in his hometown, the neighbours asked: Isn't this the carpenter's son? The Greek word means a builder or craftsman, someone who worked with wood or stone. Mark's Gospel calls Jesus himself a carpenter, so it seems Joseph taught him his trade. Christian tradition has long pictured the Son of God learning to measure, cut and finish things properly at Joseph's side. In that house, ordinary work done well was holy. Offer your work to God today, whatever it is.

Saint Joseph, worker and teacher, you taught Jesus a trade with patience and care. Pray for all who work, and for all who are looking for work. Help me do my tasks honestly and well, and find God in the ordinary hours of my day. Amen.

Intention: For workers, and for those who are unemployed or looking for work.

Day 8

When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.”

Luke 2:48 · BSB

After three days of searching, Joseph and Mary found their twelve-year-old son in the Temple. Mary said to him: Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you. Even Joseph, chosen by God to guard Jesus, knew the fear of losing a child and the pain of not understanding him. Yet Jesus went down with them to Nazareth and was obedient to them. Pray today for parents worried about a child, and for children who have lost their way.

Saint Joseph, you knew the anguish of searching for a lost child. Pray for parents who are worried sick about their sons and daughters. Give them patience when they do not understand, and lead every wandering child safely home. Amen.

Intention: For parents worried about their children, and for children who have lost their way.

Day 9

Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But His mother treasured up all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Luke 2:51–52 · BSB

After the Temple, Luke tells us only that Jesus went down to Nazareth, was obedient to Joseph and Mary, and grew in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and people. That growth happened in Joseph's home, at his table, in his workshop. After this, Joseph appears in the Gospels only as a name on his neighbours' lips. Tradition holds that he died before Jesus' public ministry, with Jesus and Mary beside him. Close this novena thanking God for this faithful guardian.

Saint Joseph, thank you for walking with me these nine days. You gave Jesus a home where he could grow. Pray for my home and for the whole Church, and when my last day comes, may I, like you, be found with Jesus and Mary. Amen.

Intention: In thanksgiving for St Joseph's care, and for a peaceful death for all.
