Saints and angels

St Patrick's Breastplate

I arise today
in a mighty strength, calling on the Trinity,
believing in the Three,
confessing the One,
the Maker of all creation.

I arise today
in the strength of Christ's birth and his baptism,
in the strength of his crucifixion and his burial,
in the strength of his rising and his ascension,
in the strength of his coming down on the day of judgement.

I arise today
in the strength of the love of the cherubim,
in the obedience of angels,
in the service of archangels,
in the hope of rising to reward,
in the prayers of the patriarchs,
in the foretelling of the prophets,
in the preaching of the apostles,
in the faith of those who confessed him,
in the innocence of holy virgins,
in the deeds of the just.

I arise today
in the strength of heaven:
the light of the sun,
the brightness of the moon,
the glow of fire,
the speed of lightning,
the swiftness of the wind,
the depth of the sea,
the steadiness of the earth,
the firmness of rock.

I arise today
in God's strength to steer me:
God's might to hold me up,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look ahead of me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's path to lie before me,
God's shield to shelter me,
God's host to save me
from the snares of demons,
from the pull of vices,
from all who wish me harm,
far or near,
alone or in a crowd.

Today I call all these powers to stand
between me and every evil:
against every cruel and pitiless power
that rises against my body and soul,
against the chants of false prophets,
against the dark laws of paganism,
against the false laws of heresy,
against the craft of idolatry,
against the spells of sorcerers,
against all knowledge that corrupts body and soul.

Christ be my shield today
against poison and burning,
against drowning and wounding,
so that I may receive a rich reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right hand, Christ at my left,
Christ where I lie down, Christ where I sit, Christ where I rise,
Christ in the heart of all who think of me,
Christ on the lips of all who speak of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I arise today
in a mighty strength, calling on the Trinity,
believing in the Three,
confessing the One,
the Maker of all creation.

Salvation belongs to the Lord,
salvation belongs to the Lord,
salvation belongs to Christ.
May your salvation, Lord, be with us always. Amen.

About this prayer

An Old Irish 'lorica', or breastplate: a prayer for protection put on like armour. Tradition credits St Patrick in the fifth century, but its language points to the seventh or eighth, and an eleventh-century manuscript preserves it. It ends in Latin with words from Psalm 3. People pray it in the morning, before a journey and on St Patrick's Day, 17 March.
