Our Lady of Guadalupe

Optional memorial

Mary remembered as appearing to Juan Diego on Tepeyac hill in 1531

This feast honours Mary, the mother of Jesus, under the title she carries in Mexico. According to tradition, in December 1531, ten years after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec capital, an Indigenous man named Juan Diego saw a young woman on Tepeyac hill, in the north of today's Mexico City. She spoke to him in Nahuatl, his own language, and asked for a church there.

The story says that Juan de Zumárraga, the bishop-elect, asked for a sign. Juan Diego returned with roses gathered in winter, carried in his cloak; when he opened it, an image of Mary was on the cloth. The fullest account was published in Nahuatl in 1649, and historians still debate how the story took shape, but a shrine at Tepeyac was drawing crowds by the 1550s.

The cloak hangs today in the Basilica of Guadalupe, visited by millions each year. For many, a brown-skinned Mary appearing to a poor Indigenous man shows that God sees those the powerful overlook.

Then Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed.

A prayer

God of the humble, you lift up the lowly, and through the simple faith of Juan Diego you showed the people of Mexico that they were seen and loved. Give us eyes that notice those others pass by, and hearts ready, like Mary, to say yes to your word. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
