Saint Mary Crucified di Rosa
Founded a community of sisters to nurse the sick and wounded in Brescia
Paola Di Rosa was born in 1813 in Brescia, in northern Italy, into a wealthy family; her father owned a textile mill. She lost her mother as a child and was educated by nuns. When her father planned a marriage, she asked instead to give her life to God and to people in need. She started close to home, looking after the young women who worked in the family mill.
In 1836 cholera struck Brescia, and Paola, in her early twenties, went to nurse the sick in the city hospital. In 1840 she founded a community of women devoted to caring for the sick, the Handmaids of Charity. During the upheavals and war of 1848–49 the sisters tended wounded soldiers. When she made her vows she took the name Mary Crucified. Worn out, she died in 1855, aged 42.
She is remembered for showing that faith means staying beside people in their pain. Pius XII declared her a saint in 1954, and her sisters still care for the sick.
For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
Matthew 25:35–36 · BSB
A prayer
Faithful God, you led Mary Crucified di Rosa from comfort and wealth to the bedsides of the sick and the wounded, where she served Christ in those who suffered. Give us courage to draw near to people in pain, and hands ready to care for them with patience and tenderness. Amen.
