Saint Sabbas

Roman Martyrology

Desert monk who founded Mar Saba, a monastery still inhabited after 1,500 years

Sabbas was born in 439 in Cappadocia, in today’s central Turkey. He entered a monastery as a boy and, at about eighteen, went to the Holy Land. The famous abbot Euthymius thought him too young for the desert and sent him to a nearby community to be trained; only later did Sabbas spend years praying alone in the Judean desert.

Around 483 he founded a “lavra”, a community of cave-dwelling hermits who met for worship, on the cliffs of the Kidron valley near Jerusalem. Disciples flocked to him, and the patriarch later put him in charge of Palestine’s hermits. Leadership was not easy: some of his own monks turned against him, and he chose to leave for a time rather than fight them. Even in old age he travelled to Constantinople to plead with emperors for his people. He died in his lavra in 532.

His monastery, Mar Saba, is still inhabited by monks today, and the prayer customs shaped there influenced Orthodox worship for centuries.

O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water. So I have seen You in the sanctuary and beheld Your power and glory.

Psalm 63:1–2 · BSB

A prayer

Faithful God, you called Sabbas into the desert and made his cave a home of prayer for many. Give us hearts that seek you in silence, patience with those who oppose us, and the courage to serve your Church with humility all our days. Amen.
