Saint Guido Maria Conforti
Founded the Xaverian Missionaries and sent them from Parma to China
Guido Maria Conforti was born in 1865 near Parma, in northern Italy, into a farming family. As a boy he often stopped before a crucifix in a church on his way to school; he later recalled feeling that Christ was speaking to him there. Reading about Francis Xavier, he longed to be a missionary, but poor health kept him at home.
So he sent others. In 1895, as a young priest, he founded in Parma a society of missionaries named after Francis Xavier, the Xaverians, and in 1899 the first two left for China. Named archbishop of Ravenna in 1902, he resigned through illness two years later. From 1907 until his death in 1931 he was bishop of Parma, caring for his people while urging every priest to support the missions. In 1928 he finally travelled to China to visit his missionaries.
The Xaverians now work on several continents. He was canonised in 2011.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

A prayer
God of all peoples, you gave your servant Guido Maria Conforti a heart wide enough for the whole world, and when illness kept him at home you used him to send others to proclaim Christ. Give us the same generous love, so that wherever we are, we may help make your Gospel known to all. Amen.
