Holy Guardian Angels
Celebrates God’s care for each person through an angel sent to guard them
The Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels celebrates the belief that God gives each person an angel to watch over them. Scripture often speaks of angels sent to protect and guide: Psalm 91 promises that God will command his angels to guard his people, and Jesus warned against despising little ones because “their angels” always see the Father’s face (Matthew 18:10).
Early Christian writers such as Basil the Great and Jerome taught that every believer has an angel at their side. The devotion grew through the Middle Ages, and by the 1500s local feasts were kept in Spain and Portugal. In 1670 Pope Clement X extended the feast to the whole Catholic Church and set it on 2 October.
Orthodox Christians also honour guardian angels, and many Protestants, while cautious about the details, share the conviction that God cares for people through his angels. The feast is a reminder that no one, however small, is forgotten by God.
See that you do not look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of My Father in heaven.

A prayer
God of all care, in your loving plan you send your angels to guard and guide your people, and you forget no one, not even the smallest. Keep us safe on our way today, open our eyes to your quiet care, and teach us to watch over others as you watch over us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
