Saint Hilarion
Brought the hermit life of Egypt to Palestine, then kept fleeing his own fame
Hilarion was born around 291 in Thabatha, a village near Gaza, to pagan parents. Sent to study in Alexandria, he became a Christian there and went to visit Anthony, the hermit of the Egyptian desert. Back home as a young man, he gave away his inheritance and settled alone in the wild country near Gaza, eating very little, praying and weaving baskets.
Almost everything we know comes from a Life written by Jerome some twenty years after his death. It is full of miracle stories that historians read with caution. What seems clear is that disciples gathered around him and crowds kept coming. Again and again Hilarion left in search of quiet: Egypt, Sicily, Dalmatia and finally Cyprus, where he died in 371, about eighty years old.
He is remembered as the man who planted monastic life in Palestine, and as someone who never stopped looking for a place to be alone with God.
Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray. Simon and his companions went to look for Him, and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!”

A prayer
Faithful God, you drew Hilarion into the desert and gave him a heart that longed for you above praise and comfort. In our crowded and noisy lives, teach us to seek quiet with you, to live simply, and to serve others without needing to be seen. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
