Saint Angelo of Acri
Capuchin friar who preached the Gospel in plain words to Calabria's poor
Angelo was born Luca Antonio Falcone in 1669 in Acri, a hill town in Calabria, in southern Italy. Drawn to the Capuchin friars, he twice entered their novitiate and twice left. On the third try he stayed, took the name Angelo, and was ordained a priest in 1700.
His start as a preacher went badly. He prepared polished, learned sermons, and the story told about him says that in the pulpit his words failed him. He gave up the showy style and began to speak in the everyday language of farmers and shepherds, centring his preaching on the suffering of Christ. For nearly forty years he travelled through the towns and villages of southern Italy, preaching missions, hearing confessions and helping feuding families make peace.
He died in Acri on 30 October 1739. Beatified in 1825 and canonised by Pope Francis in 2017, he is remembered as a friar who learned that faith is best shared simply.
When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

A prayer
Faithful God, you led your servant Angelo to set aside clever words and speak of Christ crucified so that ordinary people could understand. Free us from the wish to impress, give us patience when we fail, and help us share your love plainly and gladly with everyone we meet. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
