Saint Bruno
Left a teaching career to found the Carthusians, a life of silent prayer
Bruno was born in Cologne, Germany, around 1030 and spent much of his life in Reims, France, where he ran the cathedral school for about twenty years. He was a respected teacher; one of his students later became Pope Urban II.
When Archbishop Manasses of Reims was accused of buying his office, Bruno spoke out against him and lost his posts for a time. Rather than chase a career, he chose silence. In 1084, with six companions, he went to Bishop Hugh of Grenoble, who led them into the remote Chartreuse mountains. There they built simple huts, living alone in prayer and meeting for worship. In 1090 Urban II called Bruno to Rome as an adviser. He turned down a bishopric and settled in a hermitage in Calabria, southern Italy, where he died in 1101.
The Carthusians, the order that grew from his community, still live this quiet life today. Bruno reminds Christians that God often speaks in stillness.
“Therefore, behold, I will allure her and lead her to the wilderness, and speak to her tenderly.

A prayer
God of silence and peace, you led Bruno away from honours and busy halls into the quiet of the mountains, where he sought you with his whole heart. Teach us to make room for stillness in our crowded days, to listen for your voice, and to love you above all things. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
