October 12

The saints and feasts remembered on October 12, each with a short life, a Bible passage and a prayer.

Saint Carlo Acutis

Roman Martyrology

Teen programmer who shared his love of the Eucharist online

Carlo Acutis was born in London in 1991 to Italian parents and grew up in Milan. In many ways he was an ordinary teenager: he played football, loved his dogs and enjoyed video games, though he limited himself to about an hour a week. He also taught himself to write computer code.

From his first Communion, at seven, he went to Mass almost every day, and he called the Eucharist his “highway to heaven.” He used his computer skills to build a website and exhibition about reported Eucharistic miracles around the world. He also brought food and blankets to homeless people and stood up for classmates who were bullied.

In October 2006 he was diagnosed with acute leukaemia and died in Monza within days, aged fifteen. He is buried in Assisi. Pope Francis beatified him in 2020, and Pope Leo XIV declared him a saint in 2025. Many young people see in him a sign that holiness can fit into an everyday, online life.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.”

John 6:51 · BSB

Faithful God, you drew the young Carlo Acutis to find you in the Eucharist and to serve the poor around him, and you filled his short life with joy. Help us use our time, our talents and even our screens to know you better and to love our neighbours. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
