October 16

The saints and feasts remembered on October 16, each with a short life, a Bible passage and a prayer.

Saint Hedwig

Optional memorial

Duchess of Silesia who spent her wealth and strength on the sick and poor

Hedwig was born in the 1170s into the powerful family of the counts of Andechs in Bavaria. While still a girl she was married to Henry, later Duke of Silesia, a region now mostly in southwestern Poland. They had seven children, and together they founded the Cistercian convent of Trzebnica.

Hedwig used her rank and money for those in need, supporting hospitals and caring for lepers and the poor. She lived simply in the middle of a ducal court. A well-known story says she went barefoot even in winter and carried her shoes in her hand when her confessor told her to wear them. Her life also held deep grief. Most of her children died before her, and in 1241 her son Henry was killed fighting the Mongols at Legnica.

Widowed in 1238, she spent her last years at Trzebnica, where her daughter Gertrude was abbess, and died there in 1243. She was canonised in 1267 and is still loved in both Poland and Germany.

She opens her arms to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.

Proverbs 31:20 · BSB

A prayer

Faithful God, you gave Hedwig a heart open to the poor, and you held her steady through power, loss and sorrow. Teach us to use what we have for those who suffer, to live simply, and to trust you when grief comes, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

Optional memorial

French nun whose visions of Christ's heart spread devotion to the Sacred Heart

Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in 1647 in a village in Burgundy, France. Her father, a notary, died when she was a child, and for about four years she was so ill she could hardly leave her bed. In 1671 she entered the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial.

Between 1673 and 1675 she said that Christ appeared to her, showing his heart burning with love for people who often ignored him. She described being asked to spread devotion to that heart: receiving Communion on the first Friday of the month, praying for an hour on Thursday nights, and keeping a special feast. Many of her sisters doubted her and thought she was deluded. Her Jesuit confessor, Claude La Colombière, believed her and supported her.

She died in 1690. Devotion to the Sacred Heart spread widely; in 1856 its feast was extended to the whole Catholic Church, and she was canonised in 1920. Christians remember her as a witness that God's love is personal and patient.

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:28–29 · BSB

A prayer

Gracious God, you gave Margaret Mary a deep sense of the love of Christ, and you kept her faithful through illness, doubt and misunderstanding. Open our hearts to that same love, make us gentle and humble like your Son, and help us return his love in prayer and in kindness to others. Amen.
